Home / entertainment / Wuthering Heights - ITV drama review

Did anyone else watch the 2 part drama adaptation of Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights on Sunday and Monday night (30th and 31st August)?Wuthering Heights is my favourite book, and I watched it with a friend who's favourite book is Jane Eyre, written by Emily's sister Charlotte. So between us we were very much looking forward to it.But we were a little disappointed. We missed the first 10 minutes of the 1st episode, so we're not sure how much of an explanation they gave to the second generation of characters, because they started the story near the end with Catherine and Linton about to marry. When they returned to this generation/section of the book at the end of Monday's episode they didn't give much explanation to who everyone was - so we hope they covered this at the beginning of Sunday's episode. The beginning of the adaptation did well at setting the scene for the audience to feel sorry for Heathcliff - they showed how badly he was treated by Hindley and other children in the village. However, by the end of the drama you could barely still feel sorry for him after how he behaved - which was quite true to the book. Despite loving the novel (and always actually, thinking Heathcliff wasn't too bad considering what he'd been thought) it is a book with very few likeable characters. Meanwhile, we felt on Sunday that Cathy wasn't quite the game playing Diva she was in the book - but she kinda pulled this back by the end of Monday! Our main problems with the story telling, was the casting of Edgar Linton, and the development of the 2nd generation.I really like Andrew Lincoln who played the part of Edgar Linton - I know him from Teachers and my boyfriend knows him mainly as Egg from This Life. However, whilst he acted the part of Edgar well, he just didn't suit the role. Edgar Linton is blonde compared to Heathcliff's dark looks. Andrew Lincoln has dark hair. He's weak and feeble compared to Heathcliff's strong and firey nature. Andrew Lincoln just doesn't come across as pathetic - he's too strong a presence; too "hunky"! The script referred to his "milky hands" and to one day being man enough to deal with the servants - but these lines seemed to come from no where as the scene wasn't set for him to be a weak character. It was as if the main characters knew something that the audience didn't, because he was said to be weak rather than actually seem it.The next generation were skipped over - the drama should perhaps have been set over 3 episodes - as we didn't see some of the characteristics of Linton, and we didn't see how hard Heathcliff tries to ruin Hareton by beating him and not educating him, but how the little boy is too loyal to him to care. We also didn't hear about the actual demise of Hindley. It's made me want to read the book again though! So if you do too, or if you're studying it, here's where you can get it...
